Nobody leaves the house. ⁠
𝙇𝙚𝙩 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚 - 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙨:⁠
⁠
- shops are all closed⁠
- no traffic on the road⁠
- no people on the go⁠
- no internet, no TV, no connection to the outside world⁠
- light is not allowed (and it gets dark by 7pm)⁠
- being quite is requested
⁠
It's like a mandatory quarantine for everybody in Bali, no matter if you are Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Atheist. No matter if you are spiritual or not, you have to stay put. ⁠

Some people get overwhelmed by the thought, some love it.⁠
⁠
𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚'𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙄 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙉𝙮𝙚𝙥𝙞⁠
⁠
- think it through and prepare mentally⁠
- organise food and an easy meal for the evening because cooking with light isn't an option. Not even a little torch light.⁠
- store phone and laptop as this should be a digital detox day⁠
- prepare your Yoga mat, journal, books, games and anything that will entertain you (and whoever is with you)⁠

- Nicco (my son) and I have been spending each Nyepi together and we build a beautiful and very colourful tent out of sarongs and blankets!⁠
Inside that tent we have a little light and enjoy the evening hours when it's dark out there. And we go to bed early. ⁠
⁠
Keep in mind that there are Balinese checking on houses, those people have spent many many hours at the temple to pray for invisibility the day before. (so today), and they act as police.⁠
⁠
Not respecting the rules would have serious consequences so best to embrace this day and make it memorable.⁠
